Jack Garland is an American artist

Episode 440: Jack Garland steps in to talk about his new book waco, a book developed through the Nearest Truth Year-Long Photobook Program and has since been published through Nearest Truth Editions.

To explain waco, and the work we put into it both conceptually and practically is a little difficult as both Jack and I are intent on letting the book, wherein as much as possible, breathe without controlling the narrative too much. waco is a book of American photographs. There are hints at undergirding ideas, but I believe that it operates with each reader in its own way, which is to suggest that it functions as a space for projection. One might feel that it is a book about the American West, but in reality it is a larger picture of America itself.

In our conversation, we go through the process of making the book and detail some of the conceptual lode found within, including how it might be interpreted. We also discuss Jack’s background and how he arrived at the images he has made for the book. I am obviously biased when it comes to the work, but I believe it is a fine book full of the potential for a robust engagement regarding the underlying possibilities of its reading. Please tune in. We worked very hard on this book and hope you get a chance to see it.
