Ryan Spencer is an American artist

Episode 422: Ryan Spencer joins me to discuss his incredible new book, There is No Light at the End of the Tunnel Because the Tunnel is Made of Light, published this year by TBW Books.

I had a fantastic time speaking with Ryan Spencer about his new book, which has an excellent ambient essay by Rebecca Bengal. The book reminds me of a Photo Roman format book in which literature/text and images are parsed out through the form of a book, using all three forms to combine into something that reads between cinema, picture book, and literature. I love the mass-market paperback size, which delineates how to navigate the book. Further, I also love Afghan Whigs, a band that the artist uses to undergird the project conceptually.

The second book shows how the artist has carved out a niche between still cinematic images and their reuse. We discussed both of these books in our conversation. Please tune in, and better yet, get the book. It is a brilliant and resourceful way to engage with the worlds of text, image, and cinema.
