Episode 434: Vera van Dam joins the podcast to discuss her exceptional new book, Dahlia, published by Setanta Books.

I had the pleasure of meeting Vera at Unseen this year to discuss her work. In our conversation, we discussed the background of her intimate portraits of women in cars and the social significance of the symbolic move to place women in various states of undress, observed, and owning their image before Vera’s camera. As an environment usually associated with testosterone and performance, the photos Vera crafts subvert the order of gender and provide a world of desire and, at times, strange and undulating voyeurism.

In person, we discussed themes of of the car and the body, voyeurism and the power of women behind the wheel. It is a fantastic body of work and one of my favorite books of the year, a second from Setanta in 2024. Please delve into this episode, it was a joy to discuss these topics and more with Vera. Her practice is fascinating.
