Jens Liebchen is a German photographer

Episode 390: Jens Liebchen is a German artist whose work crosses the threshold between documentary, photojournalism, street photography, and conceptual practice.

In essence, Liebchen’s work is not positioned to a specific genre but plays between the boundaries of each, creating a rich and dynamic practice. His recent book, L.A. Crossing, has been published by Hartmann Books. The work explores the haunting condition of urban L.A. at a point of arrested movement during the pandemic.

Throughout the course of the conversation, we spoke about Jen’s background, but also his various books including DL07 Stereotypes of War, a fascinating, if hard to find book that plays with the tropes of war photography in the vein of Gilles Peress. It is a fascinating study in which the artist uses the language of war photography to subvert our expectations as the work was shot in 21st Century Tirana, Albania where there was no war. The results are credulous and impressive. Please Tune into our conversation.
