Episode 450: I am honored to present episode 450 with my colleague Angela Boehm and her incredible new book, Minus 30, published by Hartmann Books.

I won’t lie; I am a huge fan of Angela and her work, and it was an incredible pleasure to work with her on the book throughout our Nearest Truth Photobook program. An incredibly insightful artist, Angela is one of the hardest working people I know, whose valuable insight has been a pleasure to work with. Minus 30 seems, on the surface, like a book about winter. Dreamy, if cold, landscapes fill the frames peppered with the visitation of various fauna, notably the black crow, whose interludes shape the book with an ominous resonance.

The book is about winter for sure, but it is also about memory and the idea of how we tie our early years to place. Growing up in Saskatchewan, Angela ties the breadth of the winter landscape to how she thinks of home and as those winters become less and less heavy and burdensome, questions arise about the ecology of the north and the world in general. With climate being a part of the discussion, it is not surprising that the ominous tones of the birds strike more unease with their sequencing. Something feels amiss.

The book is beautifully designed by Akiko Wakabayashi and has supporting essays from Daniel Blochwitz and Brad Zellar. As the book is pretty much sold out, I can only suggest putting in the work to track down a copy. I am a huge fan of it and am continually impressed with Angela and her work. Please tune in to hear us speak about it.
