Felipe Russo is a Brazilian artist
Episode 464: Felipe Russo is a Brazilian artist with whom I had the pleasure of interviewing in person during my visit to São Paulo, during our São Paulo Syntax workshop.
I first encountered Felipe’s monumental photobook, Garagem Automática, a title that I covered on American Suburb X when it was released some time ago. I was taken with the simplicity of the idea of photographing the garages of São Paulo, which we discussed in detail. I can attribute the book to my outlook on architecture as a subject that I am interested in investing more of my time in. The book examines the garage as a municipal space, characterized by its accumulation of exhaust, decay, and darkness. It remains an essential book on my shelves.
During our conversation, I was also privy to reading Felipe’s book Centro, another vital book that examines the city. Centro is slightly different as it explores the quotidian forms that the artist meditates over with his large-format camera. We discussed it all, including several other projects that Felipe has produced, as well as his background, which includes his participation in the esteemed Hartford program in America. We spoke about photobooks and his general practice.
Please tune in to this episode. Felipe is one of São Paulo’s eminent young artists whose career is worth watching.
