Annebella Pollen is a British lecturer and writer

Episode 505: Annebella Pollen is an esteemed writer and academic based in England. Her work traverses themes of culture, photography, and places a heavy emphasis on the vernacular, or everyday uses of the medium, as well as quotidian design.

Her book Nudism in a Cold Climate examines how health and The Body have been represented in pre- and post-war Britain, a topic we covered at length during our discussion. I first found her book, The Kindred of the Kibbo Kift, through Donlon Books, London’s finest bookshop. The book examines the esoteric movement of the Kibbo Kift, a camping and hiking organization founded by John Hargrave during the interwar period.

The discussion was lively, and finding out about Annebella’s personal history was fascinating. We also covered her contribution to the recent phenomenon/book of the U.K. CRISP PACKETS 1970 – 2000, published by Sports Banger, a fantastic book about consumer design, nostalgia, and crisp packets through thirty years of U.K. history.
