Beate Gütschow is a German artist
Episode 513: Legendary German artist Beate Gütschow joins me to discuss her recent book Resistance, Flood, Fire, Resistance, published by eminent publishers Spector Books in collaboration with Foto Arsenale Wien.

I have been following Beate Gütschow for many years. In her previous work, I was drawn to her imagined architecture and to her ability to present the idea of monolithic buildings as sculpture, which verges on sci-fi. With her ability to create scenes, there was always something fantastical about her work, along with its often brutal, futuristic nature, that drew me to it.

In her new book, the work feels more urgent. There is a continued sense of unease in the new work, and yet gone are all of the edifices, the seeming concrete edifices, which have now given way to the natural world and the catastraphism it finds itself in. In short, the work feels real, sustained, and vital in a new way. In the new book, Gütschow follows eco-protests across Germany in the wake of several recent natural disasters, covering the moment, the environment, and the frustration of a world ecology spinning out of control.
