Episode 342: Harri Pälviranta and I sat down to speak about his compelling book Battered published by Kult Books, which I featured as one of my top choices for end of the year photobook list.
Battered is a difficult book. It is essentially a book that is a typological study of violence. The portraits within the book are from a stint that Harri did during the mid-2000s photographing violence related to nights out and drinking. During the episode, Harri speaks about his experience and decision to make a book from the material, which I find fascinating.
Throughout the conversation, Harri and I spoke about the experience, but also took some time to philosophize about photography, ethics, and how we see topics such as those found in battered and how to analyze them and make sense of the aesthetics that result from them. It was a singular discussion; please tune in!
