Episode 396: Chloe Juno was kind enough to spend some time with me to speak about her collaborative photobook Monuments, made with artist Alan Gignoux.
Monuments is an illustrated and critical look at coal mining in Germany and the wake that resource extraction leaves in its wake. The book is a brilliant collaboration between the two artists. There is a sense of loss in the book. The two artists take different approaches to document the German mining area. Alan focused more on the homes, while Chloe looked at the debris, almost like an archaeologist or anthropologist. You can see Chloe’s motivations for looking at the environment on a micro level from her work that she makes in her hometown of Brighton, England entitled Someone’s Rubbish, a long-term project focused on objects she finds on the street which suggests a look at 21st century living in an indexical manner. Some of the objects she finds range from the mundane to the harrowing.
Throughout the episode, Chloe and I spoke about her approach to photography and her collaborative project with Gignoux. Hearing her speak about the mining towns of Germany and the new projects the duo are working on was fascinating. Please tune in for this episode!
