Verónica Freiras is an Argentinian photobook publisher
Episode 211: It was a pleasure to speak with Argentinian educator, publisher, and artist Verónica Fieiras of Editorial Chaco for this episode.
In the episode, we speak about Verónica’s background growing up in Argentina and her time in Spain. I have been lucky enough to work with her and her publishing house for my book Soft Touch-a very difficult book that deals with tabloid violence and the notion of collecting trauma. Though the book deals with these issues, it is not alone in the Chaco catalog for difficult material. Verónica has been publishing books that are difficult for some time.
Verónica is a publisher, but an artist as well. I have her incredible book The Disappeared. In this conversation, we spoke about her work, but also about the recent Editorial Chaco book that she has published in collaboration with Archivo de La Memoria Trans-a NGO whose archival pursuit is the acquisition and safeguarding of trans people in Argentina. The book is an exceptional study of the archive’s holdings and has already sold out. Verónica talks to me about the project and how it came to fruition. It is an incredible story and a much-needed voice in the history of the photographic medium which often glosses over stories like this for a hetero-normative focus.
Please tune in! The conversation is incredibly interesting and I am excited to see what Verónica comes up with next in her publishing future. All images should be the credit of Archivo de La Memoria Trans.
