Maija Tammi is a Finnish artist working between research and practice
Episode 284: Maija Tammi is a Finnish artist and researcher working in the fields of photography and medicine exploring the relationship between photography, death, and the body.
Maija’s incredible work has made this conversation an absolute breeze to record. The artist and I both have similar interests between the body, medicine, and death. Maija’s deep practice and research made the conversation an educational episode for me. I have a number of Maija’s books and I am happy to have finally recorded a conversation with the brilliant Finnish artist. Throughout the episode, we draw from Maija’s various books and relate her work to the medium of the photobook, but also installation.
Throughout the conversation, I spoke about Maija’s background and her work. I am fascinated by artists who obtain their PhD through research and practice. It is a relatively new phenomenon that allows the artist to work between an academic and practice-based PhD doctorate. The various programs dedicated to the practice-based PhD suit an artist like Tammi well as her work functions well in making very difficult scientific concepts visual. With the use of the photobook, Tammi leads us through her work with a nimble ability to get her ideas across without the often tedious aspects of academic journal writing. It is a hugely successful method of working. Please tune-in to hear Maija speak about her work!
