Gui Marcondes is a Brazilian artist
Episode 466: Gui Marcondes is a Brazilian artist and friend whom I was lucky enough to work with on his Nearest Truth Editions book, I Know I Exist Because You Imagine Me. It was one of the first books that I worked o,n and though we had some struggles with production, it is a book that I remain significantly proud of.

Gui’s new book, Ossada, published by young firebrand publishers, Selo Turvo from São Paulo, is a remarkable exploration into the world of the city, through its architecture, reformation, but also Gui’s active daughtsmanship. The book is stark and reflects, what I like to think of as a central tenet of São Paulo, namely its architecture. There is also a gret essay in the book from Alix Breda of Selo Turvo which underpins the feeling of desolation in the book.

Farfrom a documentary exploration, the book focuses on fragment, shadow, and line, while also keeping some of the more existential themes from the book we worked on. All together, the book radates a dark charisma, one in which bone, the eponymous translated title acts as a subjecteive catalyst that suggesting a subjjective undergirding both for the artist, but also the subject matter that he gravitates toward. It is a fantastic book and is printed in Riso by our solid friend Andre of Panc Press. I could not be prouder to see Gui’s evolution.

Please listen in. Gui and I have a pretty great relationship and I believe that comes out int his in-person interview. Please pick up the book if you have not already. You can find it in American, Europe, and South America at all great photobook distributors.
