Robin Maddock is a British artist living and working in Arles, France. His new book explores the new and awkward relationship of an English artist abroad in the era of Brexit. The photobook displays characteristic British black humor mixed with a bohemian romance that is saccharine and sage all at once. Robin’s signature use of intense portraiture and hand-drawing throughout the book makes the work renegade and charged with an aura of intimacy.
Robin and I sat down to discuss the work, his feelings about his native homeland of England, and all things Brexit. We talked about Robin’s background and his interest in making books with an element of handicraft.
