Thomas Albdorf is an Austrian Artist
Episode 364: Thomas Albdorf is an Austrian artist whom I have had the pleasure of meeting in person and whose books I have been able to collect. I find his work incredibly unique and as recounted during the episode. His new book Body Double, published by Same Paper, was recently published. Webber Gallery and Agency represent him.
Body Double is a book about the idea of the city of Los Angeles. Albdorf’s previous works are the culmination of sculpture, technology, and our desire to believe in photography, particularly its nature to document the faraway or exotic. Albdorf plays with how photography can be read as fantasy and often crafts elaborate cultures that act as a cohesive form that moves through the idea of a landscape. The work feels smart and tests our reliability on the tropes of desire that photography has ingrained in our imaginations.
With Body Double, the artist continues his investigation of place, though this time, through the lens of Los Angeles, the city of golden light, high drama, and where dreams go to die a slow, painful death. Driven by cinematic references, Body Double is an imaginary voyage through the complicated landscape of Los Angeles through the mechanical assemblages of a master provocateur. If you are in Los Angeles this May and June, the artist will present the work at Webber Gallery.
