Simon Bray is a British Artist

Episode 363: Simon Bray has become a dear friend and colleague. I want to point out that though Simon started taking Nearest Truth Workshops in 2021 and 2022, he has since become someone I work with as a photobook designer. I wanted to point this out for transparency.

Simon’s new book Dear Kairos, published by Sinnerboox, the result of winning the Fotografia Europea award for publishing in 2023, is a brilliant investigation regarding time, philosophy, and the medium-specificity of photography. Developed over two distinct workshops, Simon’s visits to Athens resulted in this work. Using a harmonious color balance and a series of multiple framing of the same subject, Dear Kairos is investigating the potential for photography to be viewed from different moments, positions, and possibilities. It is the sum of a lot of work and deserves the award it won.

During our conversation, Simon and I spoke about the book. Still, we also talked about his other projects, notably his work around mourning and photography, of which he has several projects all worth viewing on his website. We also spoke about his background as a musician, both of us being drummers. Please tune into the episode. It was quite moving at times and I think of Simon as a great artist which we can expect much more from in the future.
