Tonje Li is a Norwegian Artist

Episode 408: Tonje Li is a Norwegian artist working between photography, film, installation, and the photobook. The Norsk Fotografisk Fond , The Forbundet Frei Fotografer, and Norwegian Photography Now have sponsored this episode.

I first met Tonje in 2022 at the FFF annual photobook festival. I was invited to do portfolio reviews of a few people’s work and met Tonje in that capacity. I remember being taken with her work, not knowing exactly what I was looking at. At that time, she had already assembled several images that would feature in her new book Follow the Lost Jockey, which is forthcoming through Nearest Truth Editions. The images were surreal, ephemeral, and hard to interpret. They exist as fragments from our natural world, however skewed.

Druing this conversation we spoke about the book and our first meeting, but also focused on Tonje’s extensive back catalog of work, some of which I had not been familiar with until we spoke. I find her work, which incorporates video and installation to be incredibly fresh and intriguing. Please tune into this episode and look for book very soon.
