Jan Rosseel is a Belgian artist and bookmaker

Episode 483: Jan Rosseel is a Belgian artist and bookmaker. His incredible book, Belgian Autumn, is a deep dive into the murder of his father and the resulting conversation around the criminal gang of Nivelles.

Jan’s practice examines violence in general and exists within an extended photography-and-adjacent media series. He has explored topics as wide-ranging as digital violence and the study of smell (olfactory). Jan is also known as an incredible bookmaker who conducts workshops. I first came across Jan’s book last year and was really taken with the subject matter.

I am trying to examine the links between true crime and the photobook, so within these merging categories, Jan’s impassioned book about his father found its way to me. I do not want to limit the tragedy surrounding the discussion of his work or the loss of his father, but I want to suggest that it is an excellent book, objectively speaking, and Jan has been gracious to talk to me about it and some of his other works. Please listen in.
