Claudio Pogo and Magdalena Wysocka are a collaborative duo who publishes under Outerspace Press in Germany

Episode 485: Two amazing artists that I feel pretty in awe of have joined me for a discussion about their work. Claudio Pogo and Magdalena Wysocka are artists who collaborate and make independent work under the publishing house, Outerspace Press.

Based in Berlin, the duo have been low-key making some of the finest artist books around with a control over their production that is the envy of many people in the business. Their work incorporates archival material and has darker overtones that discuss the human condition and phenomena such as belief. Often harrowing in some respects, books like And Then There Was the Night use found material to tell a narrative based on unusual case studies and bring it to life through their scratchy, purposefully unresolved dedication to the book form.

What makes their practice really interesting is how they read the contemporary market and the publishing terrain, and have moved into total independence with their publishing, which is often laborious and challenging, with many hours of backbreaking binding, gluing, and overall photobook production as a key means of expression. I really value what they do and want to encourage, like I have with my discussion with Victor Sira, that people listen in deeply and try to understand what the duo is up to. Please listen in. There is significant value to be found.
