Manuel Naranjo Martell is a Spanish photographer

Episode 524: Manuel Naranjo Martell is a Spanish photographer whose beautiful recent book, Saca 1504, published by Editorial RM, explores the essential relationship between the local community of Doñana and the wild horses of the national park, with an annual festival that was first established in 1504, in which the wild horses are rounded up, marked, and branded for identification.

The culture of this annual event is incredibly local, and access to these images is not open to outsiders. Manuel gained access and spent long periods with the Yeguas/cowboys, earning their trust and following them on their journeys, a project he continues to this day.

The book is a beautifully printed account of his time with the horses and the Yeguas. The work has a documentary feel reminiscent of Josef Koudelka and Larry Towell. We spoke about this in the episode, amongst many other things particular to the work. Please tune in!
