Gundula Schulze Eldowy is a German artist
Episode 517: Returning from a slight break, I was incredibly fortunate to have this conversation with the legendary artist Gundula Schulze Eldowy and her wonderful friend and artist Claudia Hill, who helped us along with translation when we needed it.

Gundula has lived several lives in one. Starting her life in East Germany during the Cold War, the artist’s work is well-regarded. Though people most often cite her book Berlin on a Dog’s Night and The Big and The Little Step, her work extends beyond the early images she made as a young twenty-year-old student, covering regions as far as Egypt to Peru, and she also spent three years in America. During her time in America, and before, she became close friends with a Swiss-American artist, Robert Frank, with whom she remained pen pals for decades.

During this conversation, we cover Gundula’s life until her exile from Egypt and all that that entailed. We made a conscious effort to return to her life in Peru in a subsequent episode, given the incredible detail presented in this episode. Please Tune In for this special episode featuring an incredible artist.
