Matthew Connors is an American photographer
Episode 518: Matthew Connors is an American artist. His new book, The Axe Will Survive the Master, has been recently published by SPBH/MACK.

I had the opportunity to cover Matthew’s excellent book Fire in Cairo, published by SPBH back in 2015, and was really taken aback by how refreshing it was to see a young artist, outside of the known agencies, spending their time to investigate the many contemporary problems that we were encountering from political destabilization, war, and the never-ending discussion around terrorism and the NSA. The book radiated an incredible energy that was almost unbelievable, as if I were looking at a book of action-film stills.

Moving forward one full decade, Matthews’ new book is out, and I wish I could report that feeling has diminished as we have been shepherded into the grace of stability and political calm, but as we all know, that is not the case and the world, has tumulted from an incessant anxiety and uncertainty into discussions surrounding data centeres, surveillance, and world war three, while also witnessing a livestream genocide. Suffice to say, Connors has been busy tracking these events and applying them photographically with incredible skill.

During our conversation, we spoke about how Matthew manages to make the work, his travels, and how we are both fascinated and repulsed by the notion of the world, politics, and the events that we have been witnessing. It is an in-depth discussion and bears some scrutiny for the phenomenal work of Matthew. Please tune in.
