Mark Power in a British artist
Episode 167: Mark Power is a British artist whose work I value highly.
I have had the good fortune to meet and work with Mark and have been following and supporting his efforts on Good Morning America, his proposed five volume set of books about America photographed over the last decade. The full set will be published by GOST. Currently, the first three volumes have been published and all are brilliant. I have covered a few of these books on American Suburb X previously.
The books are an inquiry into the contemporary American landscape. Though it would be easy for Power to work on the political level, his books thus far have favored an observational prowess that speak obliquely about political issues without using his images as either overly cynical or condemning. Though people enter into his frames, many of Power’s photographs are about the “look of America” over the past decade. The results are defined by his incredible ability to look askance to find images whether it is from the railroad or the interior of an office.
This episode is specific to Good Morning America. Mark has a large body of work to catch up on and I hope to continually check in to build his biography through his many acclaimed bodies of work and books. Please Tune In.
