José Pedro Cortes is a Portuguese artist

Episode 186: José Pedro Cortes is a Portuguese artist based in Lisbon. He is also part of the publishing collective Pierre von Kleist.

I caught up with José Pedro Cortes to speak about his history, books, and his current exhibition Corpo Capital on view at Galeria Francisco Fino. I have been a fan of his work for some time particularly his photobooks published alongside a number of incredibly talented artists working under the Pierre von Kleist moniker. José Pedro’s work is brilliant and we spoke about a number of factors that contribute to its high standing in the Portuguese and international community.

Throughout the episode, we spoke about José Pedro’s process and his particular use of his archive, and how keeping images fluid is important. José Pedro’s concerns in photography from banality to realism and the meaning of place within his work shed fascinating insight into the work. Whether photographing in Israel, Japan, or Portugal, José Pedro is able to transform the environment into something distinctly his own.

Please tune in for this. José Pedro Cortes continues to inspire.
