Christian Patterson is an American artist
Episode 242: These episodes with Christian Patterson were recorded over the course of 2020 and 2021. They are the first examples of the longer durational biographic detailing of an artist’s career. I was friendly with Christian ahead of our conversation, but feel now as though we are quite close having detailed his beginnings through his work Bottom of the Lake. We decided to cut off Gong Co., his forthcoming body of work as it is not complete yet. When that comes out, we will continue the discussion.
With such a rich history in photography at a comparatively young age, Christian has a lot to offer and I am honored to have sat with him discussing his work, his methodology, and his incredibly important Redheaded Peckerwood book published by MACK. It is a story that speaks about an alternate America and is focused on the story of Charles Starkweather and Caril Ann Fugate’s murderous spree across the Midwest in 1958. Christian’s work speaks about the debacle, but also asks us t consider the wider applications of photography to truth and history. Without going into detail in the episode index, I will suggest that they are somewhat chronological starting with Christian’s background progressing through a page-by-page discussion of Redheaded Peckerwood.
