Episode 337: Maria Lax is a Finnish artist working in London, England. Setanta Books published her book Some Kind of Heavenly Fire in 2020.

This conversation was a long time in the coming. I had a chance to review Some Heavenly Fire a few years ago and enjoyed the work for its colorful gem-like images mixed with a fun narrative that reads one part biography and one part science fiction. The story revolves around an idea of an extraterrestrial visit and her grandfather’s notes surrounding it. The images are somewhat psychedelic and play with the tropes of science fiction through the application of color. One is reminded of the cinema of  Panos Cosmatos, particularly his film Mandy. During the conversation, Maria and I spoke about her book, her general practice, and her commercial work. Please tune in and purchase the book if you get the chance. They are both delightful.

A quick note to mention that the thumbnail image is not from the series Some Heavenly Fire.
