Gareth McConnell is an Irish artist
Episode 384: Legend Gareth McConnell joins me to speak about his new book The Horses, but of course, we covered quite a bit of his other works as well. Gareth is a gem and in my estimation one of the most underrated artists working in the field right now.
Born and raised in Ireland, Gareth has been a fixture of East London for some time. He has published several books. The first of these tomes that I came across was his self-titled book published by Steidl and Photoworks in 2004. It was a book that I had picked up while working at a bookstore when I first moved to London in 2005. I remember being transfixed by one particular image of a a open wound spurting blood from an injection spot. It was a harrowing image that did not quite match the cover of the book that I had picked up to shelve while working the photography section in the shop. I remember the push and pull of those two images.
Flash forward to present, and having met Gareth once between now and my first experience of picking up his book, we finally managed to sit down and speak about new book The Horses, published through his publishing house Sorika. We spoke about the book, but also his general use of color which is quite specific and nearly psychedelic. Please Tune into this episode. Gareth is a generous, kind and incredibly talented artist.
