My take on the 55th Arles Les Rencontres de la Photographie
Episode 414: My expansive take on the 55th Edition of Arles Rencontres de la Photographie. I visited more exhibitions than usual and had a great time. I find myself more interested in Arles in the summer than Paris during the autumn for various reasons, but most of that stems from the fact that it is not commercial.
Vampires Fear No Looking Glass Grupo Cali
There were several highlights this year. I can’t say that I have a favorite, but the Aperture Women in Japanese photography exhibition along with the Astrid Ullens de Schooten Whetnall’s collection curated by Urs Stahel are two. Being confronted with great of Lewis Baltz was a highlight. With equal emphasis, I suggest Vasantha Yogananthan’s exhibition and the Vampires Fear No Looking Glass Grupo Cali show to be just as great. Debi Cornwall and Sophie Calle were also fantastic. All in, it was a great year. I enjoyed Lee Friedlander curated by Joel Cohen. I did not enjoy Cristina de Middel’s exhibition for reasons that have more to do with display tactics than the actual pictures.
When Images Learn to Speak curated by Urs Stahel
It is worth noting that I will be speaking about personal things thatI did while attending Arles such as our hard-to-beat workshop with Jack Whitefield and myself entitled Interrogating Site, which was held during the festivities. It was rad and one of the best things about Arles this year. I would like to write more, but the point is to listen, no?
