Julie Hrnčířová is a Czech artist working in Norway
Episode 429: Julie Hrnčířová joins me to discuss her work. Thanks to the Forbundet Frei Fotografer, Norwegian Photography Now, and the Norsk Fotografisk Fond for making this episode possible. It will remain accessible to listen to in perpetuity.
Throughout the episode, Julie and I discussed her work and spent time reviewing individual series. I had the opportunity to meet Julie in 2022 as part of the FFF photobook festival in Oslo, and It was great to speak and catch up with the artist about individual projects. Born to Czech parents but having grown up in France, Hrnčířová’s work details several differing concerns from sculpture to labor. We spent a lot of time speaking about her series Invisible Workers, which details the lives of Eastern European immigrants in Norway. The series is poignant and talks about some of the issues of labor and migration in the 21st Century, particularly for men who work in foreign lands to send money back to their families.
We also spoke about Julie’s ongoing work, Everyday Sculptures, which uses everyday items and material goods to create intriguing sculptural juxtaposition, which she photographs and often uses the material for gallery installations. It was a fantastic conversation. Please tune in!
