Laurenz Berges is a German artist and photobook maker

Episode 437: In November, the eminent artist Laurenz Berges and I met in person to discuss his work.

It was the second time that I had the chance to speak with Laurenz, whom I do not mind suggesting is a huge source of inspiration for me personally. I have followed his work since finding out about his photobook Duisburg 4100. This book explores the town of Duisburg in a way that does not demand attention to narrative. Still, it heavily suggests a condition and an atmosphere that is sometimes oppressive, sometimes sublime. It is a top-shelf publication for me, and I very much appreciate the time that Laurenz has given for me to speak to him about his work in his Düsseldorf  studio.

I was joined by artists Jack Garland and Benjamin Pfau during the conversation around Laurenz’s studio table. The discussion centered around Laurenz’s history with Cloppenburg, and to his education with The Bechers in Düsseldorf. We also covered each of his books and some of the background that inhabits the work. It was a very fun conversation and again one that I will be forever grateful for. Please Tune In
