Peter Ian Campbell is a British photographer

Episode 480: This episode has a slight lag due to a change in A/V on our end, with apologies to Peter.

Peter Ian Campbell is a British photographer whose recent book, We Drifted like Worried Fire, observes the world of deindustrialization and time aboard PSVs (Platform Supply Vessels) in the North Sea, a precarious and fascinating journey into the production of oil, while also documenting their inevitable decommissioning and dismantling on land.

The book is filled with sublime images of the platforms, as well as of the people who make the often perilous journeys to and from them, and of the giant sculptural heaps of metal left ashore to be taken for scrap. Peter and I discussed all of this, including what it was like to produce work in such conditions, with the vast, innumerable layers of the natural world lapping at the sides of the platforms and ships. We spoke about labor, the future, and the ecological implications of the work. Please listen and grab a copy of the book if you can.
