Susan Meiselas is an American photographer and Felix Hoffmann is a German curator
Episode 277: Susan Meiselas is an American photographer. Felix Hoffmann is the Chief Curator at C/O Berlin.
This episode is slightly more concise than most of the Nearest Truth output. In some sense, I felt like we could have spoken forever about such an important book, but in this case, it made sense to keep it slightly shorter than usual as Susan’s book Carnival Strippers and its resulting re-envisioned double volume published this spring by Steidl and C/O Berlin really needs little introductions. It is one of the most important photobooks and has a long history. Many of us have our own personal thoughts about the book and Susan and Felix in my opening salvo humored me while I explained my own relationship to the book.
The reason the conversation is necessary is that in conjunction with Susan’s exhibition this spring at C/O Berlin, Felix and Susan went through her archives and found enough material to draw the second volume of photographs, notes, and color images from the original body of work. The result is exceptional. Seeing Susan’s most notable (arguably) work in color and with so many notes is really refreshing and incredibly interesting. I love seeing the process of work and seeing all of this material collated into a second volume has been an absolute eye-opener. Please tune in to hear these legends speak on the work.
