Gusmano Cesaretti and Stefano Lemon are photographers

Episode 291: Gusmano Cesraetti and Stefano Lemon are Italian photographers.

Gusmano lives in America and has been making photographs of Los Angeles for five decades. He immigrated to America with a one-way ticket and has lived in many different cities and has many stories that we were able to delve into regarding his early days in the country. He is also the set photographer for a number of Michael Mann’s movies and T.V. shows such as Miami Vice, Heat, and many more. Stefano is an Italian photographer who makes works in America and is also the publisher Lazy Dog who has published the Picture Man, a book of Stefano’s excellent work.

The conversation covers decades of Gusmano’s incredible work. Gusmano has been photographing the East Los Angeles Latino culture for decades. He made photographs of lowrider and graffiti culture before it was a thing in the late 70s and early 80s. His images are often stark and gritty. We spent a long part of the conversation speaking about Gusmano’s work and the vast archive that he holds. Stefano has been actively trying to raise the profile of Gusmano’s early works and the book that he published has an interesting mix of images, but also text, which gives a wider scope to the projects. It was an absolute pleasure to speak about Gusmano’s work with Stefano. On a personal note, the movie Heat is one of my all-time favorite movies ever, so it was a pleasure to hear about Gusmano’s background working with Michael Mann. Please Tune In.
